Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon. Early to mid-January. The event has literally overnight been propelled from a second rank race (in terms of times and entries) to the world richest marathon, when the Dubai Development Corporation decided to invest over a million dollars in prize money and bonuses, in order to put the event on the same level as the golf, (horse) racing, and tennis events in Dubai. www.dubaimarathon.org
Banca Intesa Belgrade Marathon. Late April. That this event is still on the road, after all the tribulations in the former Yugoslavia, and the opposition of some members of the city adminstration, is a tribute to the tenacity of organizer Dejan Nikolic and his dedicated team. www.bgdmarathon.org

Starting as a grass-roots event in the 1970s, it was initially through its super-fast course that Berlin came to prominence in the latter years of the 20th century, with world records out of the blue for Ronaldo da Costa of Brazil and Tegla Loroupe of Kenya. Popular entries escalated in the following years as fast as the elite runners went, and further world records, by Naoko Takahashi of Japan, Paul Tergat of Kenya and Haile Gebrselassie of Ethiopia sealed Berlin’s reputation as the world’s fastest course and one of the world’s best marathons. www.real-berlin-marathon.com
Dresdner Kleinwort Frankfurt Marathon. Late October. Through the stewardship of Jo Schindler and his elite athlete coordinator Christoph Kopp, Frankfurt’s reputation is growing apace. Being the centre of banking operations for continental Europe has helped enormously, a factor recognised by the new race sponsor, and the event is both getting faster at the front, and expanding numerically in all departments. www.frankfurt-marathon.com
Alpha Bank Athens Classic Marathon. Early to mid-November. This is where it all began! The legend of Phillipides (Pheidippides) running to Athens, to announce victory over the Persians in Marathon in 490BCE, gave rise to the first marathon race in the inaugural Olympic Games of the modern era, in 1896. The current race traces the steps of Phillipides, and with the boost of the 2004 Olympics in Athens, is being upgraded in order to capitalise on the 2500th anniversary of the Battle of Marathon, in 2010. www.athensclassicmarathon.gr
BLOM Beirut Marathon. Late November. The vision of race-founder, May El-Khalil has realised an event like no other. A whole new lifestyle, exercise and fitness has been introduced to the Lebanese through the marathon and allied events. Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon. Early December. The most successful running event in south-east Asia on just about every measure except times, the heat and humidity of Singapore militating against super-fast marks. But it is credit to the terrific organisation and generosity of the hosts that elite and general public come from across the world again and again.
