And, Pat, Happy Christmas, enjoyable Hogmanay – and a very good 2012!
Grand to think that London 2012 will be the 400th anniversary of an English Olympic tradition stemming from Robert Dover’s ‘Olimpick Games’ at Chipping Camden, started by him on ‘Dover’s Hill’ 12 miles from Stratford-upon-Avon (and quite possibly attended by Shakespeare some time between 1612 and 1615) – and followed on in a continuum in 1851 with Dr Penny-Brooke’s ‘Much Wenlock’ Olympic Games – the one’s which Pierre de Coubertain visited in 1890, and which confirmed his idea of what led to the Athens Games of 1896. In the mid-90′s IOC chief Juan Samaranch visited Much Wenlock to lay a wreath on Penny- Brooke’s grave, saying that he should be considerd one of the true founders of the modern Olympic Games,
which de Coubertin had already written. Merry Christmas, Craig.
